Reading 4: The New Aesthetic

The post from the tumblr that appealed to me was this: http://new-aesthetic.tumblr.com/post/47519909593/twitter-redcatco-we-live-in-a-world-where-even

The post appeals to me because it shows the new way our world is with the age of technology. A trashcan featuring a computer screen that displays ads on it can also display its error code. There's a certain feeling of self-awareness that people get when they see something like this. Similar to the feeling you get when you see a boot-up screen in a movie theater or a 404 page on a billboard. When one sees these things, they become aware of how saturated the new world is with technology and you can't help but laugh.

Un Chien Andalou Emulation

I chose to emulate quite possibly the most prolific work of surrealist cinema in the arthouse world, Un Chien Andalou. I've always been drawn to surrealist works of art because they offer a much different take on common conventions in the art world. I decided to use a sort of pseudo animation to create my emulation, blending elements of live action and animation to add even more of a surrealist feeling to the piece. I was inspired by a Japanese style I saw on the internet long ago (and unfortunately can not track down now) known as Gekki-mation, which popped up in the 1970's in a Japanese children's show. Gekki-mation used drawn and painted backdrops and props as well as a combination of people wearing life-sized drawings as costumes and actors.

Haven't done anything yet. Oops. I will be making some drawings for my video for secret reasons so I'll get those done today.

Diptych Animation

I was a little unsure on whether we were to use the animations to achieve the exact same image from the diptychs and therefore did something different while not using every single image from the diptych. Mine sucks, Richard's is cool.

Project 1: Diptych

Artist's Statement: The theme for the class was "fantasy and reality" so I wanted to present an image that would represent the fantasies in one's mind versus the stresses that we all think about day to day. The words we chose were "escape reality"; in my own life I often use video games, anime, and music as an escape from reality so I felt like I could use this project to accurately express what's going on in my own head. What Richard and I achieved is something truly personal within our work.

here's a short prose poem

I had a strange feeling today. I was touching my own hands and thinking about the evolution of man, how hands and fingers and arms and legs even came to be; and then I was struck with a feeling of self-awareness and something else... I couldn't tell if it was a realization of a complete and total absence of god, or a complete and total presence of god.
